That's contradicted by some reporting in the color story: "Mr. Lamont, by contrast, spent the day in virtual seclusion, campaigning before dawn and then reappearing for a low-key news conference at dusk outside his office in New Haven." And the Times' penchant for "Rival" over "Lamont" has been noted before.
